As Windows 8 has many unpatched critical security flaws by now, those not wanting to upgrade to Windows 8.1 should perform a clean installation of some other version of Windows (7 or 10).
For the last six months most of my Vista updates have failed to install. The easier ones I have tried, with no satisfaction. Is there a piece of software that can fix this problem (as opposed to trying to follow Microsoft's instructions)?

Once you get green signal from Windows 7 upgrade advisor, follow the steps given below. Insert your Windows 7 DVD in the optical (CD/DVD) drive. If you have disabled autorun, open the root of the DVD drive (Windows 7 DVD) and run file.
You can also use an USB stick to install/upgrade to Windows 7.
If you can’t install i Tunes on your Windows PC, or if you see “error 2” or "Apple Application Support was not found" after you install the software, follow the steps below in order.
If you see a different error when trying to launch i Tunes, learn how to fix unexpected quits or launch issues.
You can run the tools listed below in Safe Mode with Networking, although they might then tell you that problems were not fixed.
Windows 8 (not 8.1) stopped receiving updates after 12th of January, 2016.
Current users can upgrade for free to Windows 8.1 via Windows Store.
Is there a different comparable update for 64 bit OS or is there a different problem?
Having the same problem and pursuing similar solutions with out success, I tried downloading the recommended update for my Vista Home Premium SP2 64 bit OS.
